Education is a primary goal at the North Carolina Transportation Museum. A number of programs are offered to tour groups. In addition to 150,000 square feet of visual exhibits, hands-on activities are available, as are thirty-minute train rides around the site and rides on a restored turntable. Visitors who are here after the last train ride of the day can see the engine run onto the turntable and into the Roundhouse, where it remains for the night on cool evenings. A full calendar of special events is offered, including temporary exhibits. The museum continues to grow, and when completed it will occupy more than 250,000 square feet of restored and renovated structures on fifty-seven acres.
